System improvement and modernization

Make the system you already use work better and keep growing with your business. I review its condition, fix problems and build improvements in stages.

You don't always need to start from scratch. If you already have a system your team uses every day, but it has become slow, keeps failing or no longer covers what you need, I review it, explain clearly what condition it is in and improve it in stages: the urgent things first, then what adds the most value to your operation, without stopping your daily work.

Sound familiar?

  • The system slows down or crashes right when you need it most.
  • Every change, however small, takes a long time or ends up breaking something else.
  • Whoever built it is no longer around and nobody really knows how it works.
  • It runs on old or unsupported technology and you worry about its security.
  • Your business grew and the system no longer keeps up: it lacks reports, features or connections with other tools.
  • You would rather improve what you already have than pay to replace everything.

What I do

  • Assessment of the system's condition (code, database, server and security), with a clear summary of what I found and what to do first.
  • Bug fixes and performance improvements where they are most noticeable.
  • Upgrades of applications, servers and databases to supported versions.
  • New features, screens and reports built in stages, with deliveries you can test.
  • Documentation and project cleanup so you don't depend on a single person.
  • Backups, monitoring and ongoing maintenance after the improvements.
  • Optional: connecting it to other systems or gradually migrating it to a more modern technology, without stopping your operation.

Experience

  • I recovered an enterprise bidding system that had been out of service for years, consolidating scattered versions of the code into a stable, documented solution.
  • I modernized legacy Visual Basic systems to .NET, unifying them into a platform that is simpler to maintain.
  • Over 20 years building and maintaining systems for government, higher education, healthcare and media, where changes are made without stopping operations.

How I work

  1. 01 Diagnosis I learn the current process, the friction points and the outcome your team needs.
  2. 02 Proposal and quote You get a clear quote: what it includes, how long it takes and what you'll receive. No surprises.
  3. 03 Delivery in stages I move forward in working deliveries so we can validate with real users and adjust in time.
  4. 04 Launch and support I put the solution into operation, train your team and provide support. You're not left on your own.

Frequently asked questions

Should I improve my system or build a new one?

It depends on its condition. I review it first and give you an honest opinion, with the advantages, risks and costs of each path. Often improving it in stages is best; other times, replacing a part or all of it. You decide with the full picture.

Will I have to stop my operation while the changes are made?

You shouldn't. Changes are prepared and tested separately, and released at times that don't affect your team, with a prior backup in case we need to roll back.

Can you work on a system you didn't build?

Yes. I start by understanding how it works: I review the code and the database, and document what I find. I need access to the system and, if it exists, to its code and server.

What technologies do you work with?

Mainly .NET (C#), PHP, JavaScript and TypeScript, and SQL Server and MySQL databases. If your system uses a different technology, we review it before starting and I tell you clearly whether I can help.

How does working in stages work?

I split the improvements into small steps, each with a clear result: first the urgent things (failures, security, performance), then what gives you the most value. Each stage is quoted and delivered separately.

After the improvements, who maintains it?

You can keep working with me on a monthly maintenance plan (backups, updates, fixes and changes) or ask for help only when you need it. We define it before starting.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the size and condition of the system. I start with an assessment and give you a written quote, with a clear scope, before changing anything.
